Almost touched by the hurricane

I just found out that my cousin Derek had been in New Orleans when the hurricane hit.
THANK GOD I didn’t know early or I would have been a total basket case.
I had been told that Derek got out safe but I had thought that he had just been in the vicinity for a tennis tournament and that had not actually been in any danger.
Well NOT!
It turns out that my cousin had received a full tennis scholarship to the University of New Orleans (full wows for that one dude!). I thought he had gotten one for Washington State and am now feeling very out of touch.
According to my dad, he had arrived in town on August 15th, checked in and started to settle into university life when the hurricane hit. He and his dorm buddies had just enough time to throw all their belongings on the third floor, jump in a buddies truck and high tail it out of there. Thank god he is a friendly enough person to be happily offered a place in a vehicle.
From there he was able to hitch a ride to a Greyhound bus and is now back in Nanaimo, BC wondering whether all his university mates got out and what is going to become of his scholarship and future education.
I am personally just very happy and relieved that he got out safe.
DAMN! I am feeling a little out of touch right now.
DEREK, STUART OR RUTH!!! PLEASE email me and connect.
Big hugs to ALL of my family.
Oh and Mike, please double check all your safety knots when climbing. Some of those pictures freak me out, but look way cool.
