Monday, April 25, 2005 I have this new student. I have given him exactly 5 classes now and he is quite an interesting guy. He LOVES his Mini. Mini Rover that is. We clicked very quickly and our lessons have become a lovely conversation session. He loves music and making music on his computer, and he loves his car. Every time he goes some where he takes a picture of his car. The mini and the cherry trees. The mini and Mt. Fuji. He even has a miniature toy mini collection attached to his dashboard. He took a picture of them for me. There are 4 and all different year versions. Did you know there is a 4-door mini? I didn't. - Yes he goes. It is a country mini. Hehehehe He is young and funny. I just desperately want to cut his bangs as they hang in his eyes. ..... Last night while getting ready for bed Li's mom let out this yelp. Li asked her what was the problem but no answer. A few minutes later she comes out of her room with her hands out asking Li if he had any gloves she can use. -Why? -When bringing JiXiang for a walk I am pushing the stroller and the sun is tanning my hands. Li's eyes roll and he sends his mom away with an exasperated look. -What! comes out of my mouth. A strange phenomenon that I have yet to understand is skin colour. Now I understand why there is different colour - pigment and all that. What I dont understand is why people want to change their colour. Japanese want to look white. They think girls should look pale and boys look dark. One of the foreigners here has the most beautiful little boy. A typical Australian with blue eyes and blond hair. Japanese people are always asking her is he is a girl. The boy totally looks like a boy!! In the supermarkets and in the specialty stores there are rows upon rows of whitening creams and lotions. The makeup is designed to make you whiter and you can even buy this powder to puff on after all your makeup is done for a finished white look. A few years ago I needed makeup so headed out to the makeup floor of Isetan and had the girl at Estee Lauder do my face. I looked like a bloody ghost. I requested some darker powder to look a tad more natural. Chinese are the same. Li is always commenting on how nice and light his skin is and Li's mom is having a heart attack over a bit of sun on her hands. One of the gospel singers, Jamie, was from a southern state that I totally can not recall right now. She was a BEAUTIFUL girl. Totally flawless skin and with gorgeous skin tone. Yes, she was black. Not ebony but a lovely chocolate. She told me once how her aunts used to comment on how sad it was that she was so much darker than the rest of the family. That the families paler skin looked better then hers. HELLO! Thankfully she considered herself good looking and her aunts stupid. Yet back home we are all going for that tanned look. The tanned look makes us all glowy and gives the impression of being rich and lazy. It also prevents me from resembling a beached whale when I am wearing shorts. Only problem is that I seem to be burning easier and much faster that I did in the past. Started happening around the 29 year old mark. Dont know if it is me or the Japanese sun, but I dont tan anywhere like I used to and am much paler then I ever was in Canada. The fact that I no longer work outside has probably contributed a lot to this. My skin ton has changed so much that my new makeup powder is MUCH lighter then my old one. I started feeling like I was applying a mask ever time I used the old stuff. Now I feel like I am enhancing my creamy coloured skin. HAHAHAHAHA!
