Tuesday, March 23, 2004 You have to admit that it is pretty cute when an entire nation tunes into the TV just to watch a horse lose. And she is a really cute horse to. You have to feel sorry for the poor girl. Record 511 million yen waged on hapless Haruurara's race KOCHI -- Bets placed on Japan's most lovable horse Haruurara, who lost on Monday for the 106th time in a row, reached a record 511 million yen, horseracing officials said. Monday's race grabbed nationwide attention because Japan's top jockey, Yutaka Take, was riding Haruurara, raising expectations that she could break through for her first win in 106 races. Haruurara finished 10th among 11 horses on Monday. Despite the horse's hopeless record, betting offices across Japan sold 511.6 million yen in tickets for the race, easily surpassing the previous record of 246.7 million yen for one race, officials said. The Mainichi first reported Haruurara's struggles when she lost her 90th race in July last year. Since then the horse began grabbing the hearts of the nation. A pop CD, books and several other goods devoted to the horse have sold unusually well. (Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, March 23, 2004)
