Tuesday, February 03, 2004 Well first of all HAPPY BIRTHDAY REBECCA!!! Love you tons! Next, Hehhe I just finished teaching my Tuesday night English class. I am sure I have mentioned this class before but it is an interesting history class. I do research on Japanese history and teach it to her in English so that she can later explain it to visiting students on exchange programs. She came to class today with a large tray of homemade sushi, a bag of beans and a fish head on a stick. Ya Today is SETSUBUN day. It is the day to expel evil from your home and self. It is just before the first days of spring. Basically, You are supposed to throw the beans out of your window and as you do that you say, ONIWASOTO – evil go away, And FUKUWAUCHI – happiness in. Preferably you do this as a family, but because Li is not around right now the cat and I did it. Then jumbo-sized rolls of sushi you are supposed to eat in silence. You are allowed to think though. If you talk while eating this sushi you will let the good spirits out of your body. I am eating the sushi right now and I am NOT talking but I am writing this for you. Hehe. There is no way to finish the amount of sushi that she gave me though and I am having a really hard time not talking, as Tintin is being destructive. OHH and I am supposed to face North East while eating, which I almost am. Supposable the direction that is lucky changes every year but we don’t know why or who controls the direction it just changes. Then there is the fish head. A real and not fake one. She brought a fish head speared on a BBQ stick with a holly leaf. This is now attached to my door. Looks a tad weird. It is supposed to bring me good luck and keep the house safe. I am supposed to keep it on the door between one day to a week. I am sure my neighbours are going to be thinking odd thoughts. I haven’t finished this sushi yet and I am getting soooooo full. Anyway that is today in Japan. ![]()
