Even though Japan definitely has its problems and their thinking can be seen as very backwards or for sure, different from ours, I have to admit that sometimes they do get it right.

They love fireworks.
We have fireworks festivals every week during the summer. People dress up all fancy and the turn out is in the thousands. The firework show can last well over two hours and they are spectacular. There is also a lot of fireworks that are set off by just the local neighborhoods for their own little festivals. You can buy fireworks almost anywhere – literally. From the convenience store to the dollar store, and don’t forget the supermarket. There is no age restrictions or ID required. They are there for you to enjoy.
And they never have any problems.
I just saw on the lunchtime news today a kindergarten- playschool class getting a full demonstration from some firemen on how to properly and safely use fireworks - everything from sparklers to the real thing. These kids were only about 6 and they were being shown. I don’t know how to use them!!! They were even given hands on experience supervised by a wonderful fireman.
I have been here for 3 and a half years and I have never heard, not even once, about a fireworks accident of any size.
Hmmmmmmm…..

Why, I ask, do we have problems?
