Monday, May 26, 2003 Z left a comment telling me she was very confused about the sitting under a table thing. I will attempt to explain this for you all. First we do not actually sit under a table, our legs are under the table. You must remember that this country does not have central heating the way we do. Everyone has air conditioners. These are wonderful in the summer and you would basically die without one but during the winter they just are not as cozy as a fireplace. They take the edge off of the chill but the kotatsu makes you feel all comfortable and cozy. Imagine your normal wood top coffee table. Now make the top detachable. Lift that top piece and you will notice a fan type heating element in the center of the table. It is fairly flat and works by electricity. The way these things work the best is by placing a fairly large quilt blanket over top of the table and then putting the top piece on top of the blanket. So it looks like this: table base - blanket - top. You turn them on and sit under them all comfortable. Actually they are really bad because they are too comfortable and you turn into a kotatsu vegetable in the winter. We have two. The second one is in storage right now because we actually dont need it but we dont want to get rid of it because it was free, looks good and we might need it in the future. The other one is a much nicer one that we bought off of Sam when she left Japan, and she had bought it off of dearest Penny when she left. Hey Penny, if you read this, I actually have some of your old furniture now. It looks good girl, thanks. Hehehehe You can actually buy kitchen table type kotatsus now. This is cool. I have already decided that if I ever go back to Canada I am finding a way to take my kotatsu with me. I love them. Hey Z, is there any really wacky Japanese stuff you would like to get as a surprise gift in the mail. I am trying to put together a odd ball package for you. Hehehe. I know that gum is on the list.
