I have developed some phobias since I came to Japan.
I have never been afraid of spiders, that I can ever recall, but upon arriving in Japan I am now terrified of them and am their #1 enemy. My immediate reaction to seeing a giant spider is to scream and then dive for the nearest club like object. This can range from a book to a shoe. What ever kills it the fastest. The Vacuum cleaner seems to work the best. Li ignores them and tends to be a tad peeved at me when I kill them. Dont care!
Snakes have never been a love in my life but they have never brought me fear. We have those cute little garner snakes at home that piss all over you when you hold them. They are fun. Japan doesn't have small snakes, they have giant 2 meter long ones. And some are poisonous. Snakes represent total fear to me. They represent wisdom in the old Japanese folk tales. Li thinks of snakes and imagines food. The guy would probably try to catch a snake if it crossed his path. Snakes make every muscle in my body want to run but my brain freezes too afraid to move.
Then there are cockroaches and centipedes. My reaction is basically the same as for spiders - kill it as fast as I can. Li, on the other hand, bolts and will actually watch the damn things escape.
Now today I discovered that my reaction to mice mimics that of a comic book character. You know the ones where the one leg jerks up to the opposite armpit and the arms to odd finger actions. The facial expression usually involves a big O shaped mouth.
Today while going for my afternoon walk a little mouse thing crossed my path and the above body reaction is what occurred.
I actually made myself laugh.

Today is bug killing day at the apartment. Personally a wonderful day except for the fact that I have to now wash every dish in the house before we can use them. This kind of sucks. The dead bugs is very good though. I live on the first floor and they all live in the open area under me. This is not a comforting feeling. The company goes in there once a year and sprays the shit out of the place. Everyone on the first floor is kicked out of the apartment and they go into our homes, lift the tatami mats and spray into the open areas. The being kick out didn't go over to well with Li today, as he had been playing mahjohn all night and was VERY tired. Poor TinTin was also kicked out and had to spend three hours in her little carry cage in the storage hut. I am suspecting that she is a little pissed.
I on the other hand will sleep very well tonight.
hehehehe
