Fruit + SALT = YUMMYYYYY!!!!

Well it does in Japan, and a little bit in China as well.

When watermelons first appear in the stores they are an early variety with not a lot of taste. They are all sold with little packets of salt taped to them.
I always throw away the salt. I could never wrap my brain around the idea on putting salt on fruit.
In Japan they sprinkle salt on the fruit before eating it. The reason is that it supposedly brings out the flavour and makes the fruit sweeter. My brain says that sugar is designed to do that.
When we brought mom to Karou’s house for a BBQ a few weeks ago his mother served some watermelon. By this time the store watermelon was nearing the end of its cycle and not tasting very good. His mom came out with this heaping plate of sliced watermelon and then walked around sprinkling salt on everyone’s pieces. I didn’t react fast enough to say stop so ended up with it all over.
Not wanting to be rude I ate the watermelon and
DAMN
It tasted good!
Then yesterday some one gave a gift of about 10 ‘nashi’ to the seiken section in this building. Nashi are a Japanese pear that actually resemble apples but taste very different.
The one girl was in the kitchen area at the end of the day peeling them all. All fruit in Japan is peeled, even grapes. It is just chicken that isn’t. (yuck) She was peeling them, cutting them into quarters, and then dipping the pieces into water. Well I thought it was water. She handed me one and to my surprise it was actually salt water and
DAMN
It tasted GOOODDD!!!
So I am now sold on the benefits of salt on my fruit. I may suffer a heart attack sooner but I will have been enjoying all of summer’s fruity pleasures my whole life.
Give it a try.
