Victoria's Brain wins bronze in Paralympic dressage Last Updated: Wed Sep 22 13:20:50 EDT 2004 CBC SPORTS ONLINE - Karen Brain of Victoria won a bronze medal in dressage Wednesday at the Paralympic Games in Athens. Brain, 34, and her horse Dasskara finished behind gold medallists Ann Cathrin Lubbe of Norway and Philippa Johnson of South Africa in the G4 division, which is for athletes classified as an incomplete paraplegic. "It's pretty emotional and it's always been a goal in my life to compete at the Olympics," Brain said. "Especially after I broke my back three years ago, to still have the opportunity to ride for my country and still pursue my dream is just everything. "If you're an athlete and sport is your passion, to have this opportunity even after such a life-altering injury, it means the world to you to have the opportunity to be here and actually win a medal." Brain, who competed for Canada at the world eventing championship in 1998, broke her back in 2001 when she fell off a horse during training. She has since learned to both walk and ride again. "I would have to say that up to today, I'm still getting better and I'm still improving," she said. "I'm grateful for the recovery I have had already."
